The Ocean is Hiring
Most initiatives to save and protect the environment are based on a philanthropic model. Oceanographica makes it profitable to save our Ocean (and ourselves) while having a grand adventure.
Oceanographica introduces a paradigm shift:
What if the Ocean paid us to save it?
Over 300 years thousands of ships sailed and sank along the Spanish Treasure Fleet’s route, full of gold, rubies and silver. Many of them sank on their way to Spain, leaving their precious cargo to the ocean. For centuries the ocean has been saving this treasure. The banks are full.
Oceanographica is starting the first of many expeditions to explore about 4,400 square miles of deep-ocean bottom off the American East coast, sharing the adventure to map the target, recover and conserve this treasure (using accepted marine archeological standards) to raise the capital to enabling the ocean to hire and pay people to clean up their mess.
The Ocean is not asking for donations. It’s open for business.
Oceanographica uses crowd-financing principles to fund the expedition. Participants can pick and choose predetermined areas of ocean bottom from our grid for a starting price of $15.00 each. By doing so, a service contract comes into effect: Participants commission Oceanographica to search the area for them, and recover any treasure that may be found. They get a percentage of the actual treasure – as does the ocean. The bulk of the proceeds from the expedition goes towards preservation and renewing the ocean by Oceanographica’s own efforts and by supporting individuals, institutions and organizations dedicated to the protection of our ocean, and it’s inhabitants.
Oceanographica will show the search live on their web site so everybody can share in the discovery. If a participant reserves enough search areas, he or she can even join the expedition – either on board the research vessel or going down in a submersible*.
We don’t know what we will find, but we do know we will find a great treasure of history, biology, geology and ocean science for the deep ocean does not only hold golden treasures.
People have a long history of simply taking from the ocean. Now it is time to do business with it. Because the well being of the ocean truly is our business.
